Monument to Yivan Kyrle "Mustafa on a trolley"
  • Destination
Republic of Mari El, Yoshkar-Ola, Yanalova Street, 3

The monument to Yivan Kyrle "Mustafa on a trolley" in Yoshkar-Ola welcomes guests right at the railway station. The sculpture captures the hero of the first Soviet sound film, Mustafa, a street kid, rushing along the rails towards a new life. This is not just a cinematic image, but a part of the history of Mari El and the whole country.

The monument to Yivan Kyrle was unveiled on November 2, 2009 to mark the 100th anniversary of the artist's birth (1909-1943). The authors of the composition are sculptors Anatoly Shirnin and Sergey Yandubaev. The monument was erected on the initiative of the republic's leadership on the site near the railway station – it is symbolic, because the image of Mustafa is inextricably linked with the railway.

Yivan Kyrle became particularly famous for his role in the film "A Start in Life" (1931) directed by Nikolai Ekka, the first Soviet sound film. The picture told about street children who got a chance to change their fate. Hero Kirli became the leader of teenagers and a symbol of change.

The story of Yivan Kyrle is tragic. A native of the Sernur district ofMari El, he worked at the Mari State Drama Theater, but in 1937 he was arrested and convicted. According to official data, the artist died in 1943 in a camp in the Urals. Today, the monument to Yivan Kyrle reminds of his contribution to culture and the difficult fate of the generation.

The sculptural composition depicts Mustafa on a trolley mounted on a fragment of rails. The figure is dynamic: the hero seems to be moving forward, singing a song. The Mari folk tune "Oh, lui modesh" was played in the film – the director left it at the request of the actor himself. The monument is made of bronze. Nearby is the station square, which enhances the effect of "movement" and makes the location logical.
