Sheremetyevo Castle is called the pearl of the Volga region. With crenellated towers and stained glass windows, it looks like a medieval one and attracts tourists with its peculiar beauty. What is so amazing about this castle?
First of all, his family tree. Its owners were Vasily Petrovich and Olga Dmitrievna Sheremetev, descendants of a well—known family. Olga was the sister of Mikhail Skobelev— the general, the famous hero of Shipka.
The
castle, designed by the German architect Rudolf Muller in the late Gothic style, also has features of Gothic, Oriental, Romanesque and Old Russian styles. The combination of red and black bricks with white stone details is simply mesmerizing. The south entrance leads to a glass-domed conservatory. Architects Alexander Stern, Alfred Parland, Sergey Rodionov, Pavel Malinovsky applied their talent to the construction of the castle. Master Erme Cristofoli was invited to arrange mosaic floors.
The
rooms of the castle had their own purpose. Among them is the famous cabinet of General Skobelev with a rich collection of weapons. The interior of another oriental-style room resembled a Persian one. It has preserved colored marble columns imported from Italy, and Arabic murals on the instructed colored marble floor. There is also an art gallery, an oak Room. As a rule, all the former master rooms were connected by special passages with spiral stairs.
The Sheremetev estate has a large park area. Many tourists are fascinated by the architecture and decoration of the St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral. Such a temple structure is not to be found on the entire left bank of the Volga. From a bird's-eye view, the temple repeats the shape of the cross.
The
castle's location in favorable natural conditions — the proximity of the Volga and Vetluga rivers, the presence of virgin forests of pine, oak, birch — attracted Russian artists, writers and historians. Vladimir Korolenko and Ivan Aivazovsky visited the castle.
Vasily Sheremetev was an avid collector who collected over a thousand objects. These include ancient ceramics, majolica, paintings by world artists (for example, El Greco, Rembrandt), Chinese and Japanese bronze products, tapestries, carpets. In 1923, they were taken from the castle to Nizhny Novgorod. Unfortunately, part of the collection is irretrievably lost.
In the 90s, like many architectural structures in Russia, the castle was going through difficult times.
Now the estate is being restored, part of the premises has been transferred to a hotel complex. Living in a 19th—century castle is already interesting. It seems that time passes differently here, everything breathes history.
The
staff of the museum complex has developed an interesting excursion and tourist program. There are traditional and interactive tours of the main house of the Sheremetev Castle, the manor, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel and the forest park area. Individual travel services have been introduced. Folk art workshops are very popular. And children's, New Year's and Christmas programs will certainly not leave anyone indifferent.
Every year, Skobel readings are held in the castle apartments in memory of the brave and invincible Russian commander. Of course, this is an ideal place for conferences and seminars.
Balls, festive evenings and receptions are held. Many visitors, sharing their impressions, say: "We did not expect to see a castle of such extraordinary beauty!". And nature itself has prepared many pleasant surprises. For example, with the Women's Lake, which has surprisingly soft and pleasant water, there is a belief that if you swim here early in the morning, a girl will soon get married, and for women who dreamed of having a child, after bathing this dream becomes a reality.
