Amsterdam Embankment in Yoshkar-Ola is a short but vibrant stretch of the Malaya Kokshaga riverbank, where facades in the spirit of Northern Europe are juxtaposed with Mari motifs. In a few minutes of walking, you seem to be transported from the Volga region to the old Dutch city. Why has this quarter become one of the most photographed locations in the capital of Mari El?

The history and architecture of Amsterdam's Waterfront

The history of Amsterdam Embankment is connected with the large-scale reconstruction of the Yoshkar-Ola center in 2005-2015. During this period, the Malaya Kokshaga River embankment was improved and new public spaces were created. The section from Pushkin Street to Gogol Street was decorated in the style of Dutch urban development.

The project was conceived as an architectural accent that would highlight the tourist potential of the city. Over time, the Amsterdam Embankment in Yoshkar-Ola became part of a single ensemble along with neighboring neighborhoods and bridges over the Kokshaga River.

The cultural value of the space lies in the bold combination of European aesthetics and Mari symbols. There is a mosaic panel with bronze figures of guslars in traditional costumes of mountain Mari. Gusli occupy an important place in the culture of the Mari people and are associated with the rituals of the traditional religion.

The block is several hundred meters long. Houses with a height of no more than three floors form a compact building line along the water.

Architectural features:

  • narrow elongated facades
  • peaked roofs
  • decorative turrets
  • bright color scheme

If you look closely, you can see small figures of animals and fairy-tale characters on the roofs. They are placed high, but due to the small number of floors of the buildings, the details are easy to see without special optics.

At the beginning of the walk, guests are greeted by a sculptural composition with Alexander Pushkin and Evgeny Onegin. Next is a Rembrandt van Rijn figure with a palette and brushes. The route ends with a monument to Nikolai Gogol, from which Gogol Boulevard begins. It was Gogol who mentioned Tsarevokokshaysk, the historical name of Yoshkar–Ola, in "Dead Souls."
