The history of Patriarch's Square in Yoshkar-Ola
The history of Patriarchal Square began relatively recently. In 2010-2014, as part of a large-scale reconstruction of the Malaya Kokshaga River embankment, a landscaped public space appeared on the site of a wasteland with reeds. The project has become part of the renovation of the central part of the city and the formation of a new tourist route.
The square received its name in 2010 after the installation of a monument to His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia. On his initiative, the Yoshkar-Ola and Mari dioceses were established, which became an important event for the spiritual life of the region. During this period, churches were actively built and restored in the city, including on the Voskresenskaya Embankment, where the sculpture of the patriarch is directed.
Since its opening, Patriarch's Square in Yoshkar-Ola has become a venue for city celebrations, festivals and official events. Today it is not only an architectural ensemble, but also a symbol of the transformed capital of Mari El.
Architectural features of Patriarchal Square
The main dominant feature of the square is a red brick building with a tall tower. Architecturally, it resembles the Sheremetev Castle in the village of Yurino. The tower is decorated with a high-precision city clock. On the upper level, a niche opens every three hours, where the dynamic sculptural composition "The Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem" unfolds.
A monument to the Holy Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia of Murom, patrons of family and marriage, has been erected on the square. There is a small chapel in their honor nearby. Newlyweds often come here after marriage registration to lay flowers and light a candle.
Behind the monument stands the building of the Republican Puppet Theater, opened in a new format in 2014. The architecture of the theater resembles Bavarian castles, which makes the ensemble of the square look unusual for the Volga region.
Patriarchal Square offers views of the Bruges Embankment and the Malaya Kokshaga Embankment. There is a popular photo zone with the inscription "Yoshkar-Ola" and a sculpture of a kitten named Barsik, one of the symbols of the city.
