The Museum of History and Archeology in Yoshkar-Ola is a space where the past of the Mari Region is revealed through authentic finds, costumes and documents. Here you can trace the path of the region from the early Middle Ages to the 21st century. Special attention is drawn to the exhibition "Ethnoarchaeology: from Imniscaris to Mari", which shows how the Mari women's costume has changed over the course of more than a thousand years.

The history of the Museum of History and Archeology began on November 4, 2018, when a new museum facility opened in the building at 10a Eshkinina Street. Its creation became a stage in the development of the republic's museum business.

The expositions reflect key events in the history of the region: the entry into the Russian state, the pre-revolutionary period, the formation of Soviet power, the contribution of residents to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and post-war development. The museum preserves the material evidence of the past and helps to understand the evolution of the culture of the Mari people.

Expositions and features of the Museum of History and Archeology

The museum building is located next to the Bruges embankment and fits seamlessly into the architectural ensemble of the area. This is a three-storey space where each level is dedicated to its own theme.

The archaeology department is located on the second floor. The exhibition "Ethnoarchaeology: from Imniscaris to Marie" with reconstructions of women's costume complexes of the VI–XIX centuries is presented here. Visitors will see archaeological finds from the Middle Ages, jewelry, clothing items and household items.

The third floor is occupied by the exhibition "Mari region. Milestones of history". The halls feature authentic costumes of townspeople, peasants, merchants and intellectuals, photographic documents and materials on the development of the region until the 2000s.

The museum regularly hosts book fairs and art markets, which makes the museum a vibrant cultural center of the city.

Interesting facts about the Museum of History and Archeology

In 2019, the museum jointly with the Saratov Regional Museum of Local Lore held the exhibition "Song of the Forest and Steppe: Alamner and Ukek. For the first time, the
Ethnoarchaeology exposition systematically presented reconstructions of Mari women's costumes from different eras.
The funds contain authentic pre-revolutionary costumes of various classes.
One of the sections is dedicated to the contribution of the Mari people to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
Until 2017, there was a Children's museum and Exhibition Center with game tours and museum camps. The
museum actively cooperates with cultural venues in the region.
Olga Anatolyevna Trebushkova, Head of the History Department, has been working on the formation of expositions for more than 30 years and is an Honored Worker of Culture of the Republic of Mari El.

The museum is accessible to visitors with disabilities: there is a ramp, an elevator and an equipped sanitary room.

Tips for tourists

The best time to visit is on weekdays in the morning. In spring and autumn, it is convenient to combine a visit with a walk along the embankment.

Set aside 1.5–2 hours to inspect the main exhibition. If you plan lectures or temporary exhibitions – up to 3-4 hours.

Photography is allowed without a flash and tripod. The exhibits must not be touched.
