Destination104 Sovetskaya St., Yoshkar-Ola, Republic of Mari El
The Tsarevokokshay Kremlin in Yoshkar-Ola is a reminder of the fortress from which the history of the city began in 1584. The wooden walls have not been preserved, but it was here, on the right bank of the Malaya Kokshaga, that Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich laid out the Tsar's city. Today, the complex is considered the youngest Kremlin in Russia and at the same time the starting point of the city's history.
The appearance of the fortress is associated with the events of the XVI century. After the capture of Kazan by the army of Ivan IV in 1552, the Mari lands became part of the Moscow state. Defensive posts were created to strengthen power in the new territories. One of them was Tsarev Gorod on Kokshaga, which later became known as Tsarevokokshaysk.
The fortress was originally made of wood. Stone was hardly used in the region, and the river did not allow for regular delivery of building materials. In 1696, a severe fire destroyed the city, and the defensive walls were no longer restored – the military significance gradually lost.
The modern cultural and historical complex "Tsarevokokshaysky Kremlin" was opened in 2009. Its task is to preserve the historical environment, show the stages of development of the center of Yoshkar-Ola and make the past understandable for guests and residents of the city.
Tsarevokokshaysky Kremlin today: description and architecture
Before the construction of the complex, archaeologists conducted large-scale excavations. The remains of a 17th–century moat and rampart, fragments of trade shops from the 18th and 19th centuries, coins, jewelry, household items and weapons were discovered. These findings confirmed that the Kremlin was replaced by a Market Square, the center of urban life.
The architectural appearance of the complex is made in the traditions of medieval Russian architecture. The enclosed area with four towers and walls with galleries forms an integral ensemble of the historical part of the city. It is spacious inside, which allows for festivals, fairs and city celebrations.
