The National Art Gallery in Yoshkar-Ola is a modern museum complex in the very center of the city, on Obolensky–Nogotkov Square. The building with its tower and chimes resembles Italian Renaissance palaces and has long been part of the city's routes. World-class exhibitions are held here, and every hour a mini-performance with a donkey and an icon is played on the facade.
The history of the National Art Gallery began on November 4, 2007. The gallery has become a structural unit of the RepublicanMuseum ofFine Artsand the first museum space of this scale in the region. The opening coincided with the active development of the Yoshkar-Ola center. The new cultural facility fits seamlessly into the ensemble of the emerging architectural core next to the Mari State Opera and Ballet Theater named after E. Sapaev, Lenin Square and the embankment, located within walking distance.
Russian Russian Museum: a Virtual Branch information and educational center was opened here in 2010, and the Cultural and Exhibition Center of the State Russian Museum was opened in 2021. This enhanced the status of the site and expanded opportunities for residents and visitors of the region.
Architectural features
From the first days, the architecture attracted attention: red brick, colonnade, arched windows and tower clock. The project is inspired by the motifs of the Doge's Palace in Venice. The main detail of the facade is a tower clock with a dynamic composition. As the chimes strike, a donkey with the icon of the Mother of God "Troeruchitsa" comes out of the window. The plot is connected with the history of the transfer of the icon to Mount Athos and symbolically reflects the spiritual traditions of the region.
Inside, visitors are greeted by marble staircases, spacious halls, and an art salon on the ground floor where paintings and souvenirs can be purchased.
The National Art Gallery in Yoshkar-Ola occupies two exhibition halls with a total area of about 1,200 m2. The spaces are equipped with modern lighting equipment, climate control and security systems, which allows them to host expositions of federal and foreign museums.
Since its opening, the National Art Gallery has been implementing large-scale exhibition projects. The first exhibition "Faces of Time" presented the cultural heritage of Mari El.
Over the years, works by Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Edgar Degas, Ilya Glazunov, and Zurab Tsereteli have been exhibited here. Projects from the collections of the Hermitage, the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum were held. This makes the gallery an important point of attraction for those who are looking for something to see in Mari El.
