Yalchik is not only one of the most famous and beautiful lakes in the republic, but also the largest lake. Its area is 149.6 hectares.
Thelake is located in the central part of the Volga region of Mari El, on the territory of the Mari Chodra National Park.
Lake provalny, of karst origin, consists of a large central basin – Bolshoy Yalchik and adjacent 3 side reservoirs connected to it by narrow shallow channels.
Thewater in the lake is clean and transparent. The shores are mostly sandy and only muddy in places. Yalchik is surrounded on all sides by a mixed coniferous-deciduous forest with a predominance of pine. Reeds, reeds, arrowheads, and cattails grow in shallow water. Ichthyofauna: perch, pike, crucian carp, roach, tench.
Theshores of the lake are inhabited by tourists, vacationers, athletes, and schoolchildren.
Thereare several recreation centers, sanatoriums and boarding houses on the coast (Olympian, Chaika, pension "Yalchik", recreation center "Rubin", Polytechnic, campsite "Yalchik", etc.).
