The Memorial House-Museum of the first Mari writer Sergey Grigoryevich Chavain is located in the very center of the village of Chavainur in the Morkinsky district. The village was founded by the writer himself and the inhabitants of the village of Maly Karamas.

The House Museum has been operating since 1961. In 1968, in honor of the 80th anniversary of the writer's birth, an alley of friendship made of fruit trees was planted in the garden of the museum house.

The Memorial Museum consists of two parts - a one-story wooden writer's house and a two-story wooden building of the literary and ethnographic complex. On the walls of the house-museum there are family photographs of S. G. Chavain, portraits of Mari writers, magazines and newspapers in the Mari language, in the publication of which S. G. Chavain participated. The furniture and decorations of those years have not been preserved, so the items on display here are decorated in the style typical of that time. Among the memorabilia in the museum are books and magazines published during the life of S. Chavain, photographs with family, friends and workmates, personal belongings of the writer and much more.

In the autumn of 1988, on the 100th anniversary of S.G. Chavain's birth, a literary and ethnographic complex was opened, which was built according to an original design in the traditions of wooden architecture. The museum's halls contain more than 1,000 exhibits - unique collections related to the writer's life, household items and culture of the Mari people, books and paintings.
