On the way northeast from Yoshkar-Ola, among the endless fields on the 15th verst to the right, travelers can enjoy a picturesque panorama of the buildings of one of the oldest monasteries not only in the Mari Territory, but also on the entire left bank of the Volga. This is the Myrrh—bearing Monastery.
The
place, as the chroniclers used to say in the old days, was "green and red and decorated" with labor and prayer. The history of this monastery, one of many in central Russia, is full of charm. Years and centuries have passed over its gray walls. They contained everything: the appearance of the image and the miracles of healing, the monastic ministry and the flourishing of the monastery, the years of hardship and ruin, rebirth and return.
The monastery dates back to the middle of the 17th century and is associated with the appearance of the miraculous image of the Most Holy Theotokos with the holy myrrh-bearing women. The construction of the monastery was carried out quickly, already in 1652 the monastery was ready. Axes rattled, crowns of logs grew. A wooden church in the name of the myrrh-bearing wives, cells, and outbuildings grew up on the site of the icon's discovery. According to some reports, the wooden temple lasted for 67 years, and then the construction of a stone one began in its place. The temple was built at the time when the abbot of the desert was Joasaph (1712-1723). It was consecrated around 1719, has survived to our time and is the oldest stone temple in the Republic of Mari El.
For centuries, the Myrrh-bearing desert spread the light of spiritual enlightenment in the Mari territory. The missionary activity of the monastery had a huge spiritual and moral impact on the local population. The miraculous icon illuminated with its light everyone who venerated it. The monastic worship, performed strictly according to the rules, and the entire structure of the monastery made an indelible impression.
