Lenin Square in Yoshkar-Ola is the central public space of the city and the place where its rhythm is felt. In winter, the main Christmas tree and ice rink sparkle here, concerts and fairs are held in summer. Once there were potato fields and wooden houses on this place. How did Lenin Square become a symbol of urban life?
In 1935, a new street appeared in the city – in honor of the Mari poet. Sergey Chavain. The street was built up with wooden houses and outbuildings. In the mid-1930s, the first general plan for the reconstruction of the city was developed, which provided for the creation of a central square on this site. However, the implementation of the project was stopped by the war.
The active formation of the architectural ensemble began in the 1950s. The Mari National Drama Theater named after M. Shketan, the building of the Council of National Economy (now the administrative building at 2 Gagarin Avenue), and the Sovetskaya Hotel were built. In 1960, after the demolition of wooden buildings, a Central square was formed.
In 1966, a monument was erected here. Vladimir Lenin, and the square received its modern name – Lenin Square. Since then, it has remained the main urban space for mass events.
Lenin Square in Yoshkar-Ola measures 140 × 150 meters. The space is open, well-viewed, with wide pedestrian areas.
There are located on the square:
- Mari National Drama Theater named after M. Shketan;
- monument to Vladimir Lenin; on
- the east side is the building of the Volga State Technological University;
- From the south is the building of the former Sovetskaya Hotel.
In winter, the main city Christmas tree is installed here, there is an ice rink and the residence of Santa Claus. Agricultural fairs, concerts, rallies, festivals and national holidays are held in spring and summer. If you are planning a route through the center, it is logical to include Lenin Square in the list of "what to see in Yoshkar-Ola".

- By public transport: to the stop "Vashskaya" or "Pension Fund". On
- footfrom the city center – 5-10 minutes, depending on the starting point.
Parking space: free parking areas are located on the university side and next to the theater.
Availability: the space is adapted for people with disabilities.
Tips for tourists
The best time to visit is during the day at any time of the year. On New Year's holidays, it is especially atmospheric in the evening when the illumination is turned on.
It takes 20-30 minutes to explore the square, but if you plan to visit the theater or attend an event, take more time. In summer, you should take water and a hat – the space is open. Photography is allowed.
Nearby there are other interesting objects of the city center, which are conveniently combined into a walking route.

The nearest hotel is the Revizor on Gogol Street. You can have a snack at the cafe "Simple food" on Leninsky Prospekt. There are also other restaurants and coffee shops in the city center within walking distance.
