The T. Evseev National Museum of the Republic of Mari El is one of the main cultural centers of the region. It was founded on March 4, 1920 and became part of the process of forming the national identity of the Mari people. The museum received the status of a "national" museum in 1992.

The history of the T. Evseev National Museum is closely connected with the name of ethnographer Timofey Evseevich Evseev, a collector of folklore, teacher and researcher of Mari culture. It was his collections that formed the basis of the first exhibitions.

During the Great Patriotic War, the museum preserved its funds and continued its scientific work. Today, the expositions cover the path of the region from ancient Marian culture to modern achievements.

Over the century, the museum has grown from a small collection into a large complex with several branches and collections of more than 238,000 items. In 2025, the exhibition "Mari El. From Tradition to Innovation", previously presented at VDNH in Moscow.

Expositions and features of the museum

The main building is located at 153 Sovetskaya Street. Since 1946, the museum has occupied a historic building built in 1901. Over the years, it housed an arrest house, a labor faculty, and during the war, the Leningrad State Optical and Mechanical Institute under the leadership of Academician S. I. Vavilov. In 1960, the building was reconstructed and the third floor was added.

  • paleontological exhibits with fragments of mammoth and woolly rhinoceros

Modern equipment – touch panels, audio guides, video projections – makes the visit interactive.

  • numismatic collection includes awards of the Russian Empire, the USSR and the Russian Federation.
  • In the dioramas you can see rare birds of the republic. The
  • paleontological collection contains the remains of primitive animals from the Ice Age.
  • In 2025, the museum conducted 3,311 excursions, which were visited by more than 88,000 people.
