The house of merchant Pchelin in Yoshkar-Ola is one of the most mysterious and ancient buildings in the city. The modest facade hides meter-high walls, unusual vaults and legends about treasure caches. If you want to see the real pre-revolutionary Yoshkar-Ola, and not just the ceremonial remodels, be sure to include this house in your walking itinerary.
The history of the Pchelin House begins in the middle of the XVIII century. The building was built at the expense of the merchant of the first guild, Ivan Andreevich Pchelin, a representative of the famous Tsarevokokshai dynasty. The Pchelinykh family traded, was engaged in distillery, land lease and leather production. In the 1780s, Ivan Pchelin's capital was about 10 thousand rubles. He allocated part of the funds for the construction of two stone houses and the Ascension Church. After his death in 1792, the male line of the family was almost interrupted, which gave rise to rumors about the "curse" of the house.
In the 19th century, the treasury bought the building to house the county school. Later, the higher elementary school, the College of Arts, the Palantai Music and Theater College worked here. During the Great Patriotic War, the XIII Years of October factory, evacuated from Kiev, was housed in the house. The thick walls have withstood serious loads. Today, the House of merchant Pchelin in Yoshkar-Ola has the status of a cultural heritage site of federal significance.
Architecture and building features
The house of merchant Pchelin is a two–storey stone building with powerful walls up to one meter thick on the ground floor. The internal partition between the rooms is also unusually thick.
Ceilings attract special attention: each room is covered with a separate vault in the form of a truncated pyramid with curved ribs. Windows of various sizes are visible from the facade, from large front windows to small ones resembling the openings of a furnace furnace.
The attic looks flat and level, which has given rise to legends about hidden spaces above low vaults. The townspeople believed that the merchant had set up caches here to store valuables. There are also legends about underground passages connecting the house with other objects of the city, but there is no confirmation of these versions.
Today, the building belongs to the Mari Diocese. It is impossible to get inside, inspection is possible only from the outside.
