The Korepov Merchants' House in Yoshkar-Ola is a rare example of early 20th century urban merchant architecture. The building was built in 1901 and reflected the era when Tsarevokokshaysk was a small but actively developing county town.
The facade is decorated with a curly frieze under the cornice. The stucco elements have been preserved above the deep semicircular windows. On the second floor, at the southern end, there was previously a veranda with carved frames. The roof was metal and, according to historical data, painted red. Decorative metal flower pots were installed at the junction of the two buildings on the edge of the roof – an expressive detail emphasizing the status of the owners.
The history of the Korepov Merchants' House began with two separate buildings. One house belonged to retired Lieutenant Afanasy Birin, the other to Sofya Remizova. In 1871, Grigory Korepov, a merchant of the second guild, purchased the Birin house. After his death, his wife, Matryona Ivanovna Korepova, took over the business. In 1891, she bought the neighboring house and combined both buildings into one to open a spacious store.
There are sales halls and warehouses on the ground floor. Haberdashery, manufactory and groceries were sold here. The goods were purchased in Kazan and at the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. In 1894, Matryona Ivanovna's annual turnover reached 30,000 rubles, a significant amount for a county town. The second floor was rented out: the county postal and telegraph office operated here, through which all the correspondence of the city passed.
In 1907, the trade passed to his sons, Peter, Alexei, Nikolai and Pavel. They created the Korepov Brothers Trading House. After 1917, the building witnessed important events: on July 1, the county council of peasants' and soldiers' deputies was located here, and on December 23, 1917, the transfer of power to the Soviets was announced. The memorial plaque reminds of this.
The house was later nationalized. Over the years, the executive committee, the post office, the People's Court and the grocery store worked here. Today, the Korepov Merchants' House is an object of cultural heritage of regional significance.
Today, the building houses:
- Migration Department for Yoshkar-Ola
- Scientific and Production Center for the Protection and Use of Historical and Cultural Monuments
