The monument to Patriarch Alexy II in Yoshkar-Ola is a landmark of Patriarchal Squareand one of the spiritual dominants of the city. This is the first monument in Russia and the world dedicated to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. It recalls an event that changed the church life of the region, and is organically integrated into the panorama of the Malaya Kokshaga embankment.
The history of the monument to Patriarch Alexy II is directly related to the formation of the Yoshkar-Ola and Mari dioceses. On June 11, 1993, by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, it was separated from the Kazan Diocese. His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II arrived in Yoshkar-Ola on July 24, 1993, and on July 25, Archimandrite John (Timofeev) was consecrated Bishop of Yoshkar-Ola and Mari at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Semenovka.
Years later, in 2010, it was decided to perpetuate the memory of the Patriarch. The grand opening took place on August 4, 2010.
Alexy II (in the world Alexei Mikhailovich Ridiger, 1929-2008) headed the Russian Orthodox Church since 1990. Under his leadership, theological educational institutions were actively opened, temples were restored, and interaction between Church and state was strengthened. For Mari El, his visit in 1993 was an important milestone in the development of the region's church structure.
The monument to Patriarch Alexy II is installed in the center of Patriarchal Square, on the right bank of the Malaya Kokshagi River. The sculpture is made of bronze and cast in the city of Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The author is the National Artist of Russia Andrey Kovalchuk.
The figure is over 3.5 meters tall and weighs about 1.6 tons. The patriarch is depicted in full robes. In his left hand is the patriarch's staff, and in his raised right hand is a dove as a symbol of peace and spiritual renewal. The view is directed towards the Resurrection Cathedral and the temples of the embankment.
The inscription on the pedestal reads: "His Holiness Alexy II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and founder of the Yoshkar-Ola and Mari Diocese." The monument is clearly visible both from the square and from both sides of the embankment.

- foot: It will take 5-10 minutes from the central part of the city and the embankment.
Availability: the territory is landscaped, there are convenient approaches for people with limited mobility.

The best time to visit is during the warm season and in the evening, when the embankment lights turn on. It takes 15-20 minutes to explore, but you can combine a walk with a visit to the Ascension Cathedral of the 18th century and other facilities of the center.
Take a camera: the monument looks spectacular against the background of water and temple architecture. When visiting, observe the rules of public order and respect for religious symbols.
