The history of the Cyril and Methodius Monument
The monument to Cyril and Methodius was erected on November 1, 2014 and inaugurated on November 2, on the eve of the Republic Day of Mari El. The monument is dedicated to the creators of the Slavic alphabet, Saints Cyril and Methodius, Equal-to-the-Apostles.
The history of the Cyril and Methodius monument is directly related to a key event for the entire Slavic world – the advent of writing. In the 9th century, the missionary brothers translated the Psalter, the Gospel, and the Apostle into Slavic. The services became understandable to ordinary people, which accelerated the spread of Christianity.
It was Cyril who created the Glagolitic alphabet, the first Slavic alphabet. Later, the brothers' students reworked it, and so the Cyrillic alphabet appeared, named after the teacher. Their work became the basis of the written tradition for Bulgarian, Serbian, Russian and other Slavic languages.
The monument highlights the significance of this cultural turn. He recalls how the word has become a tool for education, the development of schools and libraries.
The monument to Cyril and Methodius in Yoshkar-Ola is located on Tsargrad Square. The sculptural composition is made of bronze and mounted on a granite pedestal. The height of the figures is about 2.5 meters.
The images are sustained in the canonical tradition. Cyril holds a scroll with the letters of the ancient alphabet, Methodius holds the Gospel. An Orthodox cross stands between them, uniting the figures into a single composition. The author of the project is Andrei Kovalchuk, People's Artist of Russia. According to him, the work on the monument took almost a year. The sculptor tried to preserve the canonicity of the images, but to give them a vivid expression.
From the opposite bank of the Malaya Kokshaga River, the composition is complemented by high–reliefs of the enlighteners of the Mari people - St. Gury and Metropolitan Vladimir, the author of the Mari grammar. This creates a symbolic dialogue of cultures and eras.
