Monument to Elizabeth Petrovna
  • Destination
Republic of Mari El, Yoshkar-Ola, Bruges Embankment

The monument to Elizabeth Petrovna in Yoshkar-Ola is one of the iconic sculptures of the historical center of the city. The young empress on horseback seems to be looking into the future. Why is she immortalized on the embankment? The answer is connected with an important stage in the history of the Mari Territory of the 18th century.

Elizabeth Petrovna (1709-1761), daughter of Peter I and Catherine I, ruled the Russian Empire from 1741. During her reign, Orthodoxy was actively spreading in Tsarevokokshaysk (the old name of Yoshkar-Ola). In the 18th century, the Entrance to Jerusalem and Ascension Churches were built here, and a school for newly baptized Mari children was opened.

The history of the monument to Elizabeth Petrovna is connected with this stage: the sculpture recalls the cultural and religious transformations of that time.

The author of the monument is People's Artist of Russia Andrey Kovalchuk. The composition is made of bronze and mounted on a red granite pedestal. The inscription "To Empress Elizabeth Petrovna" is engraved on one of the sides.

The sculptural composition depicts the young Empress riding a horse. Her figure is light and dynamic: the cape flows to the ground, creating a sense of movement. The image was not chosen by chance – during her lifetime, Elizabeth Petrovna was a skilled horsewoman.

The monument to Elizabeth Petrovna in Yoshkar-Ola is located on the Bruges embankment, one of the most popular walking areas of the city. The sculpture harmoniously fits into the architectural ensemble and often becomes a backdrop for photographs.
