The Cologne House in Yoshkar-Ola is a building that is difficult to confuse with something else. The tall red brick "bottle" has long been a landmark of the zarechnaya part of the city. Why did the apartment building get several national nicknames at once and what stories does its "neck" hide? We are looking into what is interesting about this object and whether it is worth including it in the route around the capital of Mari El.
The History of the Cologne House
The history of the Cologne House is closely linked to the development of the Szombathely neighborhood. The area was founded in 1974 under the name "Pionersky". A year later, he received a modern name and began to actively build up. The late 1970s and 1980s were a period of large-scale construction: The city was growing, and housing was needed for employees of enterprises and young professionals. The Cologne house was built on the alluvial soils of the left bank of the Malaya Kokshaga River. This complicated the construction: the piles went almost 18 meters deep, and the foundation needed time to shrink. The project was delayed, but eventually the city received one of the most recognizable high-rise buildings.
In the original project, the NTO library was planned on the first floors. However, in 1992, the Wedding Palace was opened here. Until the early 2010s, many citizens began their family history in these walls. Later, the registry office moved to the Bruges Embankment.
The unrealized idea of the Seventh Heaven restaurant on the upper floors is also interesting. According to the architects, visitors had to take a separate high-speed elevator up there without stopping. The project was never implemented, and the premises were used as offices.
The height of the building is about 85 meters. The house has 23 floors, of which 18 are residential. There is only one entrance. Architecturally, the object belongs to the late Soviet modernism. The recognizable shape with an extension at the top resembles a bottle of cologne – hence the main folk name. Over the years, the building was also called "Coca-Cola": for a long time there was a large-scale advertising painting on the facade.
The red brick, vertical silhouette and "neck" of the upper floors create an expressive image. The house is clearly visible from different points of the zarechnaya part of the city.
