Merchant Naumov's House is one of the iconic monuments of pre-revolutionary architecture in Yoshkar-Ola. Its unique layout attracts attention: the first stone floor was intended for trade, and the upper wooden floor for the merchant's family. This combination of commercial and residential space makes the Naumov house an interesting object for studying the history of merchant life.
The history of the house
In 1906, merchant Grigory Pavlovich Naumov purchased a plot with buildings and in 1907 erected a two-story house in its place. The first floor was occupied by shops, the second floor was residential. The house became the center of the merchant's business and family life, combining trade and everyday life under one roof.
After the revolution, the building housed the Tsarevokokshaysky District Committee of the Russian Communist Party (b). Here, on November 7, 1920, a telegram from Moscow was read about the formation of the Mari Autonomous Region – an important event in the history of the region.
In 1921, the first printing house of the Mari Territory was opened in the house, which operated until 1959. It became possible thanks to the support of the Kazan Union of Polygraphists, craftsmen from Nizhny Novgorod and Yaransk, as well as local writers. The editorial offices of the newspapers Yoshkar Keche and Golos Mari, the forerunners of the future Mari Truth, were located on the second floor. Later, in 1925, the Mari State Publishing House began operating here.
Architectural features
Over time, the house has undergone changes: the decorative elements of the roof – turrets, chimneys and carved porticos - have been lost. After a fire in the late 1980s, the roof was restored in a simplified form, and a major renovation in 2010 restored its historical appearance.
The house is striking in the contrast of materials: the stone lower floor with high arched windows and the ornate wooden second floor with carvings. The building has a spacious basement, previously used as a warehouse and cellar. Later, an extension was added to the house, expanding the original volume.
Today, the house houses the Museum of the Mari Fairy Tale "Silvertooth Pampalche", where visitors can get acquainted with the folk tales and traditions of Mari El.
