The "Yoshkar Ser" tract is one of the most expressive natural places of Mari El. It is located in the north-west of the Morkinsky district, near the village of Nylkudo and about 23 kilometers from the village of Morki.
The name ""Yoshkar Ser"" can be translated from the Mari language as "Red Coast". The tract occupies the slope of the Jurdura upland, covered mainly with deciduous forest. Hidden between the trees are trails, streams, and small open areas with views of fields, meadows, and surrounding villages.
What is interesting about the tract
"Yoshkar Ser" is a complex natural monument of national importance. The protected area of about 60 hectares has been created to preserve the picturesque landscape, geological deposits, water network, as well as rare plants and animals.
The base of the tract is an erosive slope with a length of about 3.5 kilometers. In its structure, sediments from different tiers of the Permian system are found side by side — an unusual geological combination for the republic.
Narrow, winding streams flow down the slopes. In some places, their shores resemble small canyons, and rock outcrops form rapids and low waterfalls. The tract looks especially expressive in spring and after prolonged rains, when the watercourses become more abundant.
Rare inhabitants
Rare plants, lichens and mosses, as well as protected animal species, are found in a relatively small area. Among the birds noted here are the common kestrel and the corncrake. Of the rare insects, swallowtail, large overgrown and other species of butterflies are found.
It is better to observe nature from the outside: do not unnecessarily leave the trails, do not pick plants and do not disturb animals.
Route and preparation
The ascent takes place along natural forest trails. After the rain, some areas may be slippery, so comfortable shoes with non-slip soles are necessary for walking. It is advisable to take drinking water, a charged phone, a remedy for ticks and insects, and also save a map of the area in advance — mobile communications outside populated areas may be unstable.

Take all the trash with you, keep quiet and stick to the existing trails. Careful attitude helps to preserve the tract and its rare inhabitants.
