The monument to the Holy Martyr Leonid in Yoshkar-Ola is not just an urban sculpture, but a sign of memory of the tragic pages of the 20th century. It was erected in honor of the Bishop of Mari, who was shot during the years of repression. Why did this monument appear here and what role did Bishop Leonid play in the history of the region?
The history of the monument to the Holy Martyr Leonid is directly related to the fate of Lavrenty Yevtikhievich Antoshchenko, who was born on August 6 (19), 1872 in Yekaterinoslav province. After graduating from the city college, he entered the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra, and in 1898 became a novice. In 1905, at the Chudov Monastery, he was tonsured a monk with the name Leonid and ordained a hierodeacon. In March 1937, he was appointed to the Mari Department. Bishop Leonid settled in Yoshkar-Ola, and later served in the village of Semenovka at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to archival data, with his arrival, religious life in the republic has noticeably revived. This attracted the attention of the authorities.
In December 1937, the bishop was arrested. After interrogations, he did not admit the charges of counterrevolutionary activity. The sentence, execution by firing squad, was carried out on January 7, 1938.
The monument to the Holy Martyr Leonid in Yoshkar-Ola was opened on July 4, 2008 as a tribute to the victims of repression. The monument was consecrated by Archbishop John of Mari and Yoshkar-Ola. The author of the sculpture is Andrey Kovalchuk.
The monument to the Holy Martyr Leonid is located on the right side of Obolensky-Nogotkov Square. The composition is set on a cross made of granite paving stones. The height of the sculpture is 3.6 meters. The bishop is depicted in episcopal vestments: in his right hand is a staff as a symbol of spiritual authority; in his left is the icon of the Mother of God "Trinity". A laconic inscription is placed on the pedestal: "Hieromartyr Leonid Bishop of Mari." The monument is harmoniously integrated into the architectural ensemble of the square and often becomes a stopping point during walks through the historical center of the city.
