Monument to Arkady Krupnyakov
  • Destination
Republic of Mari El, Yoshkar-Ola, Chavaina Boulevard

A monument to the writer, whose books combined history, fiction and the living language of journalism, has been erected in the center of Yoshkar-Ola. The monument to Arkady Krupnyakov in Yoshkar-Ola appeared in 2012 and became a tribute to the author, whose work is associated with the Mari Region. The sculpture conveys movement, as if the writer continues his journey through time and the pages of his own novels.

Arkady Stepanovich Krupnyakov (1919-1994) was born into a peasant family. After school, he worked as a mechanic's assistant on the railroad. In September 1939, he was drafted into the army. During the Great Patriotic War, he worked his way up from a squad commander to a correspondent for a front-line newspaper. His military experience was later reflected in his works – in the precision of details and attention to human characters.

After the war, Krupnyakov worked as a journalist for the publications Mariiskaya Pravda, Sovetskaya Tataria, and Krymskaya Pravda. In 1961, his first historical novel "By the Russian Sea" was published, and in 1989, the fantasy novel "Amazons" was published in Yoshkar-Ola, which marked the beginning of a large-scale series. In 1968, the writer was accepted into the USSR Writers' Union.

The grand opening of the monument took place on November 4, 2012. The authors of the project were sculptors Sergey Yandubaev and Anatoly Shirnin. The monument highlights the importance of the writer for the cultural life of the region.

The monument to Arkady Krupnyakov is made of bronze. This is a one-figure composition: the writer is depicted in motion, with a book in his left hand. His figure seems to be pointing forward, a symbol of continuous creative search. The pedestal is decorated with bas-reliefs. They depict scenes from the author's key works – the trilogy "Gusliary" and the novel "Tsarev Gorod". These elements make the monument not just a portrait image, but an artistic story about literary heritage. The inscription on the pedestal is laconic: "Arkady Krupnyakov." This decision focuses on the personality of the writer and his contribution to Russian literature.
