Republican Puppet Theater: a magical world for children and adults
Puppetry art of the Republic of Mari El has a rich history, starting in 1942. At the height of the Great Patriotic War, the artistic director of the Mari State Drama Theater, Georgy Kryzhitsky, found a set of prop dolls and a screen, which were originally used for theatrical intermissions. However, soon the actors, inspired by success, began to create independent productions for children.****

By order of the Administration for Arts under the Council of People's Commissars of the Mari Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, on May 15, 1942, a self-supporting brigade of puppeteer artists was formed. The first performances, “Parsley for the Kids” and “Parsley for the Nazis,” showed the demand for the new genre. In March 1943, the theater received state status and began working with a permanent staff, producing up to ten productions a year.****

One of the key events in the life of the theater was the emergence of its own troupe, focused on the Mari language and national culture. The first production in the Mari language, “The Mask of Yyvan” (“Ivan the Bear”), was created in 1961 and marked the beginning of a long-standing tradition. In 1968, the theater finally received its own premises in the building of the City House of Culture. This was an important step to strengthen its position as the cultural center of the region. In 1989, the theater moved to a specially built building on Karl Marx Street. Architect Anatoly Galitsky created a space that fully meets the requirements of puppetry art. Since then, the troupe has actively toured the country and abroad, participating in prestigious festivals and competitions.****

Today, the Republican Puppet Theater is not only a place where performances are held. In 2014, the Year of Culture, the theater acquired a new modern building on Patriarchal Square. At the same time, a museum-lecture hall was opened, where young spectators get acquainted with the history of the theater and create their own dolls at master classes. The theater staff actively participates in the cultural life of Russia and the world. In 2020, the play “Yod Orol” (“Night Guard”) received recognition at the Golden Mask festival. The theater became the first in the republic to receive this prestigious award. Since 2022, the theater has been directed by Konstantin Shamshurov, and the artistic director is Honored Artist of Russia Galina Kovaleva.****
