The Republic of Mari El is famous for its rich cultural heritage, and one of its pearls is the Mari Theater for Young Spectators. Youth Theater was founded in 1991 and since then the theater has undergone significant changes, becoming an important link in the cultural life of the region. Initially, the theater was part of the Mari National Drama Theater named after. M. Shketan, but in 2015 received the independent status of the State Autonomous Cultural Institution of the Republic of Mari El. In 2017, its historical name was returned - the Mari Theater for Young Spectators. Since the mid-1990s, the theater's repertoire has been replenished with productions in two languages: Mari and Russian, which has become a symbol of the preservation and development of national identity.****

The Mari Youth Theater offers a variety of productions, including plays by both domestic and foreign authors. Particular attention is paid to works of Mari literature in order to preserve and pass on the traditions of the people. An important element of creative work has become the laboratory of the young playwright “U pieze” (“New Play”), where works are born that are subsequently embodied on stage. The Mari Theater for Young Spectators actively participates in theater festivals and competitions, both regional and international. The theater’s list of achievements includes participation in such events as the Bomba festival in Finland, the Golden Horse in Tyumen and Kolyada-Plays in Sverdlovsk. The performances “Music Lessons” and “At the Lower Depths” became laureates of the Yoshkar-Ola Theater Festival, and the talented artistic staff of the theater more than once received awards for best direction and performance. People's Artist of the Republic of Mari El Svetlana Nikitina and Honored Artist of the Republic of Mari El Clara Anikina were repeatedly awarded for the best roles. Young talents such as Galina Solovyova have also been recognized at competitions and festivals, contributing to the development of theater and culture in the region.****

The theater actively conducts touring activities, which helps expand its audience and popularize Mari culture. Performances take place not only in Russian cities, but also in countries where representatives of the Mari people live. Thanks to grants and support from the M. Castren Society (Finland), the theater was able to show its productions in Estonia, Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Udmurtia and other regions.****
